Outdoor Wedding Weather Tips!

By | News + Happenings, Uncategorized | No Comments

There can be a lot of positives to choosing an outdoor ceremony. For example if you choose to have your ceremony at Montfair Resort Farm on our wedding field you will have breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains behind you! One aspect of an outdoor ceremony that you can never avoid is the weather. There is a chance that it will be a blue sky day with the prefect temperatures but you won’t know for sure until your wedding day is here.  Since weather could be a concern it is good to think through what you would do in certain situations.

  • Rain: Have a rain plan! At Montfair we have a tented deck that you could use as your ceremony site if the weather is really bad. If you are getting married in the summer and an afternoon thunderstorm rolls through you could start with cocktail hour and postpone your ceremony time until after the storm has past. If it is just a drizzle you could have umbrellas for your guests and still get married outside like you had planned. The wedding party could all wear matching rain boots! It would make for cute pictures.
  • Sunny and Hot:  If you know your getting married in the summer you could prepare for the heat and have fun with it. Setting up a cute table at the ceremony site with water, sunscreen and bug spray is never a bad idea on a hot day. Your wedding favor could be a pair of sunglasses! Make sure your guest have access to water during the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception.  You can make your wedding program double as a fan or leave a fan on each seat.  At Montfair we have an air conditioned events lodge that can be used for the reception.  Being able to move inside after the ceremony is nice on those hot wedding days.
  • Cold Weather:  You can have a basket of shawls and blankets up at the ceremony site that guest can use during the ceremony and into the evening if they did not dress warm enough. Think about the food you are planning to serve and choose hot dishes.  Have coffee, hot chocolate and cider available! At Montfair we have a big wood burning fire place in the events lodge and central heat to keep your guests warm. We also have a bonfire pit that your guests can gather around in the evening to make s’mores and drink hot chocolate

These are just a few fun tips to think about when planning your outdoor wedding ceremony. If you are interested in having your wedding at Montfair Resort Farm call Katie Teel our Events Manager today! 434-823-5202

Summer Evenings at Montfair

By | News + Happenings, Uncategorized | No Comments

During these hot Virginia summers, evenings arrive as a welcome relief. Montfair offers much to vacationers who wish to relax in this calming cool at the end of an active day.

Montfair Event Supervisor, Aila Juvonen, reports that as she tends to wedding reception bonfires, she listens for our resident beaver, who never fails to let her know of his presence: he slaps his tail, thwack! against the surface of the water.

C&C-1601

Leora Vincenti, who grew up at Montfair, recalls how her father, Phil Sheridan, would haul out his fishing rod at dusk to catch bass in the Montfair lake.

“He enjoyed the quiet of being outside that time of day. Maybe the fishing was better but mostly it was for the stillness, how the air felt, wind rustling, frogs, crickets, cicadas,” she says.

He might too have heard owls: Screech and Great Horned and Barred, calling out to each other through the deepening trees.

And of course there are stars, twinkling so bright you get lost in space with them, watching them circle in the upturned bowl of the sky, held by dark outlines of mountains. The Milky Way drifts overhead like a silk scarf.  We can’t really capture these indelible moments in photos to splash on our website or post on Instagram. But trust me, summer evenings are Montfair at its core: Nature, comfort, simplicity.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Ideas

By | News + Happenings | No Comments

We all know weddings can be costly to our pocketbooks, but how often do we think about their effect on our environment? From re-thinking invitations to diverting trash from the landfill, there are many ways to make weddings more eco-friendly. Here at Montfair, we incorporate as many eco-friendly practices as we can – from using eco-friendly cleaners and laundry detergent to purchasing green building supplies – all in an effort to be good stewards of our land and business. Here are some great ideas to make your dream wedding at Montfair a little more eco-conscious.

Invitiations

You can start with your invitations. One option is to print your traditional invitations on recycled paper with vegetable-based inks.  You can also send out a traditional invitations but have your guests RSVP on your wedding website instead of mailing back a card. For a more informal, but paperless option, try E-vites!

Dress

Buying a vintage wedding dress is a great eco-conscious decision and will save you money too. If you don’t want your dress hanging in your closet taking up space after your wedding, sell it again so someone else can use it. Buy vintage for bridesmaid dresses too!

Flowers

Buying local flowers is an easy way to have beautiful flowers that don’t have to have shipped in for your wedding day. Local flower farms will use flowers that are in season at the time of your wedding.  Flower farms close to Montfair include Harmony Harvest Farm, Pharsalia Flower Farm, Ted’s Last Stand Farm and Gardens, Barn Swallow Blooms, Blue Heron Farm, and Innisfree Herb Garden.

Food

Pick a caterer that uses local and organic food! Caterers near Montfair that use local organic foods include, The Local, Claudia Gibson Catering, Harvest Moon Catering, Cakes By Rachel, Have Food Will Travel and many more.

Favors

When it comes to your wedding favors you can choose something that can be reused like a cup or a wine glass. We have seen couples give out succulents, seeds for their gardens, or trees from the Arbor Day Foundation.  Shop local for favors, choosing businesses that you know practice fair-trade and sustainable sourcing. Frolic Chocolate in Charlottesville, or Hungry Hill Farm (honey), for example, make delicious, gourmet treats.

Waste

Reduce your wedding waste by composting and recycling. Montfair has single stream recycling pick up. If you would like composting, Natural Organic Process Enterprises (NOPE) provides collection services for events and can come to Montfair after your wedding to collect your food waste.

Montfair Resort Farm would love to support you in making your eco-friendly wedding come true!

What’s in the Woods: June

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

The longest days of the year are upon us. Our wedding ceremony garden is bursting with color and winged visitors; larkspur, tiger lilies, milkweed, swallowtail butterflies, silver spotted skippers. And around the Montfair property, animals take advantage of the long light and warm weather; Baby birds fledge, turtles and frogs slip into the high water and black bears amble down from the mountains. We have had recent sightings of Belted Kingfishers, a Night Heron and ghostly-white Indian Pipes pushing up from the leaf litter. Hike along our trails or canoe in the lake and you’ll be witness to these sounds and sights.

While you stay at Montfair at this abundant time of year, you can also explore the nearby Shenandoah National Park or drive and hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Take a peek at this Bloom Schedule and Wildlife Guide to get an idea of what wild beauties you might glimpse during your explorations.

We wish you happy trails, lush and lazy afternoons, and spontaneous, magical encounters!

Love at Montfair!

C&C-0058This spring has been full with weddings and love at Montfair Resort Farm!!

TeelLatta-349We are happy to finally see the blue skies around here again! It rained almost everyday here from the end April through most of May. Luckily even with the rain all of our wedding couples were still able to get married outside at our wedding field with the gorgeous mountain range behind them. Even on a cloudy day the views from the wedding field are still breathtaking! There were a few weddings this spring that we thought we would have to implement the rain contingency plan but each time the rain either held off until after the ceremony was over or it stopped raining just in time for the ceremony.

Each wedding so far this spring had it’s own unique touch. We had one couple who got married on a Wednesday afternoon. One wedding the bride was a member of the band so she joined in to play a few songs with them during her reception. A couple weddings were creative with the desserts whether it was a candy-dessert bar or renting the Carpe Donut truck. Every wedding this spring transformed the lodge into a space that fits their own style.

Even though every wedding has it’s own unique feel they have all ended with an evening full of dancing followed by socializing by the bonfire on the lakefront. We are looking forward to all of our June weddings coming up!

If you are newly engaged and looking for wedding venue contact us today to set up a tour at events@montfairresortfarm.com or call us at 434-823-5202.

May at Montfair

By | News + Happenings | No Comments

This week I tasted my first strawberries of the season. Lady’s Slipper orchids appear in the woods. In our wedding ceremony garden, the irises, lupins and bachelors’ buttons unveil new blooms each day. The spring rains and warming weather bring a bounty of growth to central Virginia and fun May activities beckon- all just a short drive from Montfair. May is an invigorating time to experience the Blue Ridge Mountains, the famous Shenandoah National Park, and our local vineyards and farms. You can also enjoy the beauty of our own property, perhaps while attending a Wednesday Paddleboard Yoga class on the lake.

Are you ready? Summer’s around the corner, but the secrets of spring still call. Here’s a small sampling of things to do during your stay in May:
