This is a great time to escape to a warm cozy cottage in the mountains of Virginia for rest and rejuvenation and start your year out with the deep quiet and peace of Montfair’s winter landscape.
Canoe, fish, star gaze, bike. Best yet find yourself refreshed and invigorate after a meander on the gorgeous wooded hiking trails. Observe the magical winter light and breathe in the fresh mountain air. It is a great opportunity to try Shinrin-yoku. Shinrin-yoku is a term that means “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing.” It was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. There is nothing like a walk in the woods to shed off feeling the blues and regrouping with a better perspective.
This time of year we see the Hawks, Great Blue Heron, the Green Heron, and Belted Kingfishers on the Montfair lake on a daily basis! We have even caught sight of the breathtaking American Bald Eagles!
Our local is abundant with breweries, cider works, wineries, farm shops and artisan studios that often offer special winter sales.
You will want to have a hot cup of coffee or cocoa and a warm homemade sandwich at one of the local country stores for a quick lunch and maybe even hear a bit of local gossip. We love popping into the new Piedmont Place a thriving local market in Crozet that features the Blue Moon Bookstore, Smojo Juice and Smoothie Bar, Morsel Compass Eaterie and Blue Ridge Bottle Shop.
Make sure you save time to explore the Sugar Hollow entrance to Shenandoah National Park, you will discover this gem tucked away in the “holler” by following Sugar Hollow rd. that follows the Mormon’s River. This special unique spot is only 10 minutes from your Montfair cottage. Enjoy hiking along the path of the gurgling river and this time of year you will see amazing icicles hanging from the cliffs.
