Responsible Travel in the Blue Ridge Mountains: How Sustainable Tourism Creates Better Vacations
If you’ve noticed more travelers talking about responsible travel, eco-friendly travel, and sustainable tourism, you’re not alone. Today’s travelers are becoming more intentional about where they stay, how they spend their money, and the impact their vacations have on local communities and the environment.
But what exactly do these terms mean?
How can you make your next getaway more meaningful while making a positive impact on the local community?
At Montfair Resort Farm, we believe that travel should create positive experiences not only for visitors, but also for the places they visit. Sustainability isn’t a trend for us, it’s been part of who we are for decades. Dating back to founder and grandfather, John Edward Sheridan’s planning, dreaming, and journaling starting in the 1940s. Our goal has always been simple: protect the land while creating memorable experiences for our guests. This commitment is reflected in everything from our cottages and events to our nature trails and conservation efforts.
What Is Responsible Tourism?
Responsible tourism is the idea that travelers, businesses, and destinations can all work together to minimize negative environmental impacts while maximizing positive contributions to local communities and ecosystems. Responsible travel encourages visitors to:
- Support locally owned businesses
- Reduce waste
- Conserve natural resources
- Respect local cultures and communities
- Protect wildlife and natural habitats
- Choose environmentally responsible accommodations
In many ways, responsible tourism is simply about being more mindful of the choices we make while traveling.
What Is Sustainable Tourism?
The terms sustainable travel and responsible travel are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences. If responsible tourism focuses on individual choices, sustainable tourism focuses on the long-term health of destinations.
Tourism and sustainability work together when all prioritize:
- Environmental conservation
- Economic support for local communities
- Protection of natural resources
- Preservation of cultural heritage
- Education and environmental awareness
According to Virginia’s tourism initiatives, sustainable travel includes everything from choosing green lodging and supporting local food systems to participating in low-impact outdoor recreation and following Leave No Trace principles.

Conservation in Action at Montfair
We’re continually investing in projects that improve wildlife habitat, strengthen local ecosystems, and create educational opportunities for our guests. In 2026, Montfair qualified for the James River Buffer Program and partnered with the Rivanna Conservation Alliance to strengthen two significant riparian buffers on the property. Together, we planted 84 native shrubs and trees, then expanded the project with 20 additional native seedlings from the Virginia Department of Forestry nursery, bringing the total to 104 new native trees and shrubs planted throughout Montfair.
We also expanded our native habitat restoration efforts by planting 50 Purpletop native grass plugs and 50 native wildflower plugs in our Native Pollinators Wedding Field and throughout our wildlife habitat corridors.
These plantings support birds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators while increasing biodiversity across the property. Many of these native species were sourced from Hummingbird Hill Native Plant Nursery in nearby Free Union, Virginia, a nursery that specializes in plants native to Albemarle County.
Our commitment to conservation also extends to education. Last year, we launched a newsletter highlighting native plants, birds, books that promote conservation and nature, local recreation opportunities, and small businesses throughout our region. We believe that one of the best ways to encourage responsible travel is to help travelers develop a deeper connection to the places they visit.
We’ve also recently implemented the TerraCycle Cigarette Recycling Program, another step toward reducing waste and keeping recyclable materials out of landfills.
Sustainability Is Shaping the Future of Travel
The travel industry continues to evolve as more travelers seek experiences that align with their values. We were honored that Montfair Resort Farm was recently featured in Green Business Network’s article, “Sustainable Travel and Tourism,“ which highlights businesses and destinations leading the way in responsible and sustainable travel. The article explores how travelers are increasingly seeking out businesses that prioritize environmental stewardship, community engagement, and long-term sustainability. It also recognizes organizations that are demonstrating that tourism can have a positive impact on both local communities and the environment.
Sustainable travel doesn’t have to be complicated. Choose locally owned businesses. Support conservation efforts. Spend more time outdoors. Slow down and appreciate the places you visit. At Montfair Resort Farm, we’re proud to welcome travelers who believe that great vacations and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
