Reservations are available online on the Wildrock website. Here at Montfair we love sharing the nature, comfort, and simplicity of this family owned retreat in the mountains of Virginia. And we do encourage our guest to disconnect from the social media, news, and politics of today that are dividing us. Whether you just need some solitude, need to reconnect with a significant other, or just really need to connect with your children this is the perfect spot for you.
Here you can totally disconnect by booking a stay in the Butternut, Magnolia, or Loblolly cottages where the only media is an Am/Fm radio with Cd player. There is Wi-Fi in all the cottages but some parents choose not to tell their children. Instead they will canoe across our beautiful lake while taking in splendid mountain views, sit on a bench and just simply listen to nature, or go for a hike and bike ride. It is amazing how close you can become with others when you put your phones, tablets, and laptops away for awhile and just talk and listen.

If you need a little more media that’s fine as well, as I said all of our cottages have Wi-Fi, it is your choice to use it. For TV with a DVD player, choose The Pawpaw, Holly, Hazelnut, Sycamore, Dogwood, and Sassafras cottages. There is reception of two local channels including the public TV channel. Bring your own DVD’s to play or choose some from the Montfair office’s small DVD library. For Cable TV reception you will want to book our lovely Beauchamp House.
But as I said in the beginning we do encourage everyone to step away from your screens and take in the world around you and learn about the people you love.

This is a great time to escape to a warm cozy cottage in the mountains of Virginia for rest and rejuvenation and start your year out with the deep quiet and peace of Montfair’s winter landscape.

Canoe, fish, star gaze, bike. Best yet find yourself refreshed and invigorate after a meander on the gorgeous wooded hiking trails. Observe the magical winter light and breathe in the fresh mountain air. It is a great opportunity to try  Shinrin-yoku. Shinrin-yoku is a term that means “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing.” It was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. There is nothing like a walk in the woods to shed off feeling the blues and regrouping with a better perspective.

This time of year we see the Hawks, Great Blue Heron, the Green Heron, and Belted Kingfishers on the Montfair lake on a daily basis! We have even caught sight of the breathtaking American Bald Eagles!

Our local is abundant with breweries, cider works, wineries, farm shops and artisan studios that often offer special winter sales.

You will want to have a hot cup of coffee or cocoa and a warm homemade sandwich at one of the local country stores for a quick lunch and maybe even hear a bit of local gossip. We love popping into the new Piedmont Place a thriving local market in Crozet that features the Blue Moon Bookstore, Smojo Juice and Smoothie Bar, Morsel Compass Eaterie and Blue Ridge Bottle Shop.

Make sure you save time to explore the Sugar Hollow entrance to Shenandoah National Park, you will discover this gem tucked away  in the “holler” by following Sugar Hollow rd. that follows the  Mormon’s River. This special unique spot is only 10 minutes from your Montfair cottage. Enjoy hiking along the path of the gurgling river and this time of year you will see amazing icicles hanging from the cliffs. These are only a few of our favorite activities. Stop by the Montfair office and the Montfair team will be happy to share more favorite local activities! Come on up to the mountains of Virginia. There is plenty of fresh air, natural beauty and room to roam on our family property. We hope to see you soon!

Reflections on the Montfair Lake

The first snow of the season blanketed the Blue Ridge over the weekend and what a sight to behold! Our cottage guests enjoyed pines draped with snow and inspiring reflections on the lake. Winter is a wonderful time to experience quiet and solitude in the mountains. Bring your dog, a good book, your favorite snacks and let all your troubles melt away. Wi-fi in our cottages will allow you to stay connected to the outside world if needed and if it snows, we’ll keep the drive clear so you can venture out to experience some of our favorite local winter traditions.

The Dogwood, Sycamore and Hazelnut Cottages

No visit to Central Virginia is complete without a trip to Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Mall. Enjoy seven blocks of holiday shopping in locally owned shops and dine in one of the many restaurants that line the bricked streets. Near the historic Jefferson Theater is The C’ville Arts Cooperative featuring art and jewelry from local craftsmen and artists of Virginia. On the west end of the mall stop for lunch or dinner at The Whiskey Jar for the best locally sourced Virginia foods. Free parking is available through January 2 along streets and in the Market Street Parking Garage. The Charlottesville Holiday Market is open on Saturdays in December and is sure to offer that special gift for a loved one this holiday season.

If your plans take you west across the Blue Ridge, make sure to take a detour through picturesque Staunton, VA. Stroll along Beverly Street for holiday shopping with a break for lunch at The Pampered Palate Cafe. Afterwards, travel back in time during a holiday lantern walk at the Frontier Culture Museum. This horse-drawn wagon ride will take you from the Old World to the New World and back featuring plays set in olden days during a holiday winter storm.

The heated Sycamore Cottage covered in snow

Sometimes, however, a cottage retreat begs for simplicity. Put your car keys away and just relax. When booking your cottage stay, inquire about having a bonfire party along the lakefront. We’ll supply the bonfire and scenery, you bring the s’mores! Stop by the markets in White Hall on your drive in and pick up all the supplies you’ll need for a warm and hearty meal cooked in your cottage kitchen. Unpack and leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind.

Enjoy special winter rates on cottage stays now through January 31 as well as our year-round discounts for stays over three days.  We’d love to hear from you in 2018!  (434) 823.5202 or montfair@montfairresortfarm.com

From all of us at Montfair, to all of our guests past, present, and future, Happy Holidays and have a very Happy New Year!
